China is expected to ban sulfuric acid exports from May, a decision that could intensify pressure on the metal and fertilizer industries as global feedstock supplies remain disrupted by the Iran conflict.
Sources familiar with the matter said some domestic sulfuric acid producers have received notices of the change, and that a major customer has been informed by a Chinese supplier. The restrictions are expected to apply to sulfuric acid, a by-product of copper and zinc smelting.
Since the Iran conflict escalated, sulfuric acid prices have risen. The report attributes the increase to near disruption of the Hormuz Strait, which has disrupted sulfur supply from the Middle East. The Middle East region accounts for about one-third of global sulfur production.
Sulfur is a key input for producing sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid is essential for copper mining and for phosphate fertilizer production. By holding back supply during China’s peak planting season, the export restriction is expected to further tighten the market.
This tightening could put significant pressure on copper mining in major producing countries, including Chile, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia.
According to Argus Media, the restrictions could last through most of 2026.
