Kraken became the first centralized U.S. exchange to add native support for Tempo, a Layer 1 blockchain designed for stablecoin payments. Starting now, exchange users can deposit and withdraw USDT0 and USDC.e over the Tempo network, with settlement in about 0.5 seconds and network fees paid in dollar-denominated stablecoins, removing the need for a separate gas token.
Tempo was incubated by Paradigm and Stripe with participation from fintechs, banks and commerce platforms. It is oriented toward use cases such as cross-border payments, payroll, embedded finance and institutional money movements. The protocol offers dedicated payment lanes that guarantee low fees even during periods of high activity, in addition to settlement without chain reorganizations.
Kraken’s integration marks the first time a U.S. centralized exchange supports Tempo natively, enabling access for users to a Tempo-enabled settlement flow alongside Kraken’s existing services. The integration will allow fintechs, neobanks, payment companies and stablecoin issuers operating on Tempo to access Kraken’s full stack. Trading operations through Kraken’s app and the Instant Buy feature will be available once market liquidity conditions allow it.
The integration potentially expands Tempo’s usability by connecting it to Kraken’s platform, enabling fintechs, neobanks and stablecoin issuers operating on Tempo to access Kraken’s full stack. Kraken noted that trading features will be activated when liquidity permits and that geographic restrictions may apply depending on the user’s jurisdiction.
