The expansion project of the Ho Chi Minh City–Long Thành Expressway began on August 19, 2025, with total investment of more than 16,300 billion VND, according to the Vietnam Expressway Development Corporation (VEC). The project covers nearly 22 kilometers, including about 8.5 km through Ho Chi Minh City and about 13.4 km through Dong Nai Province.
The corridor is being widened from the current four lanes to eight to ten lanes to meet rising traffic demand between Ho Chi Minh City and the Long Thành airport area. After more than 10 months of construction, Long Thành 2 Bridge across the Dong Nai River is taking shape, with dozens of bridge piers erected above the river while construction continues on both banks and underwater.
The contractor has mobilized hundreds of engineers and workers to organize dozens of construction fronts and is working two shifts to accelerate progress. On the Dong Nai side, many pier cofferdams have been completed, with cap beams and deck construction underway. On the Ho Chi Minh City side, progress on the access road leading to the bridge is slower due to right-of-way issues, particularly around piers T12 and T13.
In addition to right-of-way and site clearance challenges, the project is affected by price volatility in fuel and construction materials including steel, sand, and stone, while the supply of some materials remains constrained. To offset schedule risks, the contractor is taking advantage of favorable weather, focusing on completing bored pile anchors, piers, ground stabilization, and approaches before the peak of the rainy season.
The Ho Chi Minh City–Long Thành–Dầu Giây Expressway widening runs from the Ring Road 2 junction in Long Trường Ward (HCMC) to the junction with the Bien Hòa–Vũng Tàu Expressway in Long Thành Ward (Dong Nai). When completed, the full route will be expanded to eight to ten lanes.
Per government and Prime Minister directives, the project must be completed in the first quarter of 2027 to align with the commissioning timeline of the Long Thành airport.
VEC’s latest report indicates total construction progress has reached over 54%, essentially meeting schedule requirements. After completion, Long Thành 2 Bridge is expected to increase traffic capacity on the Ho Chi Minh City–Long Thành–Dầu Giây expressway, strengthen connectivity with Long Thành airport, and reduce traffic pressure at the eastern gateway of Ho Chi Minh City.
Beyond transport benefits, the project is expected to attract investment, promote trade, and expand development space between HCMC and Dong Nai.
According to the plan, Long Thành 2 Bridge will be brought into operation by the end of this year, with ancillary works completed early next year before continuing with the remaining phases of the project.
