Millions of iPhone and iPad users have received an urgent update alert from Apple for iOS 18.7.7. The update is described as critical, aimed at preventing the spread of DarkSword, a mobile spyware toolkit targeting Apple devices.
The issue escalated after DarkSword source code was published on the open GitHub repository last month. The publication reportedly made it easier for multiple hacker groups to download and deploy large-scale attacks.
According to the report, once attackers infiltrate through web platforms, they can embed three covert malware modules—GhostBlade, GhostKnife, and GhostSaber—into victims’ devices. The spyware is described as taking control of the device and continuously collecting and stealing personal data and sensitive financial information without the owner’s awareness.
Due to the severity of the threat, Apple reportedly deviated from its usual approach to release an emergency patch. The goal was to protect users who remained on iOS 18 rather than upgrading to the latest iOS version.
The patch is described as expanding coverage to a wide range of devices, including iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max, as well as the entire iPhone 11 through iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e lineup. It also includes iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generations) and many newer iPad Air and iPad Pro models.
Users of iPhone and iPad are advised to update to iOS 18.7.7 as soon as possible. The report recommends enabling automatic updates in iPhone Settings or manually downloading iOS 18.7.7 to restore protective security barriers on the device.
