Vietnam’s first urban light rail transit (LRT) line on Phú Quốc is drawing attention for its scale and technical specifications, with construction starting in late 2025 and designed to support the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week 2027.
The LRT line is planned to run parallel to the DT.975 axis, the island’s main spine road, connecting Phu Quoc International Airport directly to the APEC 2027 Conference and Exhibition Center and the premium hotel complex serving the event in the southern part of the island. The project is positioned as a flagship infrastructure initiative for APEC 2027.
The LRT line is nearly 18 km long, with a design speed of around 100 km/h. This is intended to reduce travel time from the airport to the APEC area to about 18 minutes. The system is designed to carry approximately 4,500 passengers per hour.
The system uses a flexible alignment with elevated, at-grade, and underground segments. It includes six stations: five at-grade stations and one underground station located at the APEC Conference Center. The mixed alignment is intended to optimize land use, support urban aesthetics, and help reduce road traffic congestion, aligned with a long-term 100-year development vision for the “Pearl Island.”
The LRT’s exterior design draws inspiration from the dragon symbol in Eastern culture, with a predominantly red palette and moving bands of orange and yellow. Inside, the color scheme uses blue accents reminiscent of the sea and sky, while partition details are inspired by the Phú Quốc Pearl Bridge.
For passenger experience, the train design includes windows divided into two sections to widen viewing angles, particularly suited to elevated sections where riders can enjoy panoramic views of the sea and surrounding islands.
The first train sets are expected to reach Phú Quốc port in January 2027 to serve APEC, reflecting Sun Group’s organization and implementation capacity for large-scale infrastructure projects supporting the island’s broader development.
The APEC Conference and Exhibition Center has a total floor area of 157,375 m², including four above-ground floors and one basement. It is described as the largest conference center ever built for an APEC summit in Vietnam.
A key feature is a column-free exhibition and conference space spanning 81 meters, covering 11,050 m². Upon completion, it is expected to become the world’s largest ballroom, surpassing Caesars Forum in Las Vegas, which currently holds the record at about 10,220 m².
