According to information from the Quảng Ninh Police, there has been recent online discussion about mobile applications that can change or spoof the number displayed during a call (Caller ID Spoofing). These apps allow users to set any phone number to appear on the recipient’s device, creating the impression that the caller is a relative, a familiar contact, or a known organization.
Police said the feature can be exploited by malicious actors to carry out crimes, particularly fraud schemes. Examples include impersonating a relative to borrow money; impersonating police, prosecutors, or courts to request personal information; and impersonating bank staff to instruct money transfers. By making the displayed number appear legitimate, spoofing can increase the recipient’s trust and make them more likely to follow the scam script, especially in cases involving assets.
