On April 3, the Can Tho City People’s Court held a first-instance trial and sentenced defendant Tran Thi Hong Tuoi to 13 years in prison for fraud. The court also ordered Tuoi to repay more than 2.3 billion dong to Mr. and Mrs. P and 460 million dong to Ms. T.
According to the indictment, Tuoi had prior relationships with Ms. DKT and Mr. NTP, as well as with Mr. P’s wife and husband. The case states that Tuoi had borrowed money from Ms. T multiple times and repaid properly, and that she also did business with Mr. and Mrs. P in land transactions.
From February 2024 to July 2024, due to a lack of funds from many people, Tuoi allegedly formed a plan to defraud Ms. T and the P couple in order to settle her debts.
The indictment says Tuoi provided false information that the landowner wanted to sell land, and asked Ms. T and the P couple to transfer funds so she could complete the transfer of land-use rights. Tuoi introduced Ms. T and the P couple to a plot and four plots.
After receiving nearly 2.8 billion dong from the victims, Tuoi allegedly did not proceed to purchase any plots. Instead, she appropriated the money to pay debts and for personal expenditure.
At court, Tuoi stated that she deceived acquaintances because she participated in “real estate flipping” and incurred heavy debt, which she said led to a misguided mindset toward the victims.
