During a visit to Amkor in Incheon, South Korea, on April 24, Bac Ninh Party Secretary Pham Hong Thai said the semiconductor industry is among the sectors the province will prioritize in the 2025-2030 period. Amkor, a global player in semiconductor packaging and testing, is described as a key link in the global semiconductor value chain as countries and businesses accelerate supply chain restructuring and expand production networks.
In Bac Ninh, Amkor’s first semiconductor plant in Vietnam was inaugurated in October 2023 with an initial investment of $529 million. By July 2024, the province issued an amended investment certificate for Amkor Technology Vietnam LLC, increasing total investment to $1.6 billion.
At the meeting, Lee Jin An, CEO of Amkor, said the company’s project in Vietnam is operating stably, with production scale expanding gradually, and that it is making a positive contribution to the group’s global supply chain. He also praised the investment environment, the local workforce, and provincial support during project implementation, adding that Amkor will continue to study and expand investment in the coming period.
Bac Ninh’s Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Nguyen Hong Thai, said the province has favorable conditions to develop high-tech industries, particularly semiconductors. He cited Bac Ninh’s strategic location, rapidly developing transport and industrial infrastructure, and an open investment climate, along with a commitment to support enterprises.
Following the consolidation of Bac Ninh and Bac Giang, Bac Ninh covers more than 4,700 square kilometers and has a population of over 3.6 million. The province is located in the Red River Delta within the Hanoi metropolitan area and the Northern Key Economic Region, with connections including Noi Bai Airport, Hai Phong Port, key northern economic corridors, and the Bắc - Nam economic corridor.
Thai emphasized that, for the 2025-2030 development orientation, the semiconductor industry is a sector the province will particularly focus on. He said Amkor’s project is not only a large-scale investment, but is also expected to act as a magnet for supporting industries and help gradually form a semiconductor ecosystem in the locality.
Provincial leaders pledged to continue accompanying and supporting Amkor to grow its production in Bac Ninh. They also said they hope Amkor will expand investment further, accelerate technology transfer, and help Vietnamese firms and firms based in Bac Ninh participate more deeply in the global supply chain.
