On April 17, 2026, Gemadept Corporation (HoSE: GMD), together with strategic partner CMA CGM (France), officially held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Gemalink deep-water port project – Phase 2.
The ceremony marked the success of the 16th National Assembly elections, the People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026–2031 term, and the 51st anniversary of the reunification day (April 30, 1975 – April 30, 2026).
Upon completion, the Gemalink Phase 2 project is expected to raise the port’s capacity to more than 3 million TEU per year, supporting rising goods volumes and enabling the port to receive large vessels through the Cai Mep–Thi Vai deep-water port cluster.
Gemalink Phase 2 expansion with CMA CGM forms part of Gemadept’s strategic roadmap for 2026–2030, centered on three pillars: port operation, Port-Logistics, and maritime transport.
Gemalink port plays an important role in the Gemadept–CMA CGM ecosystem and is one of 19 ports worldwide capable of accommodating the largest container ships, with capacity up to 250,000 tons (equivalent to 24,000 TEU).
After five years of operation (2021–2025), total ship calls through Gemalink reached 2,018, with nearly 70% of calls carrying large tonnage from 160,000 to 232,606 tons.
The port has achieved throughput of 6.5 million TEU, with double-digit annual growth.
Over the next five years, shipping lines are expected to continue ordering and deploying large container ships powered by clean energy, with tonnage ranging from 160,000 to 250,000 tons.
Together with Phase 1, Gemalink Phase 2 is expected to support Vietnam’s import-export growth and cargo throughput in the Cai Mep–Thi Vai area, with an annual growth rate exceeding 10%.
Both phases are planned to provide sufficient capacity to handle growing cargo and regional transshipment volumes, positioning the port as a leading regional transshipment hub and helping maintain Vietnam’s status as the largest deep-water port.
Gemalink Port Phase 2 is expected to be completed and operational in Q4 2027.
According to Do Cong Khanh, Deputy General Director of Gemadept: “With its location in the core area of the Ho Chi Minh City’s FTZ project at Cai Mep Ha, linking production, services and logistics, it will contribute to Ho Chi Minh City’s two-digit economic growth and the country overall, elevate the brand of Vietnamese port and logistics operations to a global level, and accelerate Ho Chi Minh City to become an international maritime financial center.”
CMA CGM is a global leader in maritime, land, air transport and logistics solutions. The group is currently ranked as the third-largest container shipping line in the world (Alphaliner 2026), operating in 177 countries with more than 160,000 employees, a fleet of over 650 modern vessels, and serving 420 ports across five continents.
