After the prolonged rainfall and flooding that lasted into late 2025, about 5 hectares of mangrove forest in Hai Ninh ward, Ha Tinh province were affected, of which 3 hectares of Avicennia marina died completely, showing signs of dry branches and leaves, with root rot and no recovery. About 2 hectares remained severely weakened, with yellowing leaves, wilting, and drying from the tips. The mangrove ecosystem was affected as the deaths occurred mostly along drainage channels, creating large gaps in the protection forest and reducing wave shielding and coastal defense. The species most affected is Avicennia marina, planted since 1994 under an international aid project. Other mangrove species, such as bần chua and trang, continued to grow normally under the same environmental conditions. In response, the Ha Tinh Department of Agriculture and Environment, in cooperation with Hai Ninh authorities, conducted field inspections and sampling to determine the cause. Initial checks did not identify signs of pests such as stem borers, crustaceans or bo hair; the wood inside the trunks remained bright, with no signs of bacterial or fungal attack. Basic water quality parameters were within permissible ranges, pH was stable, and there were no signs of pollution from industrial or domestic sources. According to Hai Ninh's leadership, the die-off began to appear clearly from November 2025, soon after the extended rainfall associated with Typhoon No. 10 (Bualoi). The local authorities have compiled statistics and submitted reports to relevant authorities to seek remedies and replacement planting. Officially, preliminary assessments indicate that the prolonged rainfall combined with unusual tidal fluctuations may be the main cause altering the mangrove habitat, affecting respiration and metabolism of Avicennia marina and leading to widespread die-off that the trees could not adapt to. The Ha Tinh Department of Agriculture and Environment has asked Hai Ninh ward to implement urgent tasks, including deploying monitoring personnel and preserving the affected area in its current state, preventing acts of intrusion or illegal exploitation. The local authorities were also tasked with compiling all historical data related to planted forest areas and preparing a verification record with photos and coordinates to serve as a basis for handling and possible forest liquidation in the future. Additionally, local authorities are planning to invite scientists and mangrove experts to conduct in-depth surveys to determine the exact cause and propose suitable recovery and replanting solutions.
