VN-Index closed on May 7 at 1,909.01, up 17.81 points, marking the highest closing level in the history of the Vietnamese stock market and surpassing the earlier record of 1,902.93 set earlier this year. The index briefly approached 1,925, a level that had not been reached before.
In the session, 333 stocks advanced, including 26 stocks that hit the daily limit up. Leading limit-up movers were VHM, STB, and the pair GEX and GEE, continuing positive momentum seen earlier in the day.
At the close, 316 stocks were advancing and 16 reached the daily limit. Meanwhile, 378 stocks declined versus those rising.
Among the top 10 stocks contributing most to VN-Index today, VHM led with a 9.78-point contribution. STB added 2.05 points, GEE contributed 0.66 points, and GEX added 0.42 points. The list also included VIC (7.53 points), LPB (1.18), HDB (0.99), and MSN (0.87).
By sector, real estate outperformed with a 2.51% gain. However, aside from VIC and VHM, most sector stocks closed in the red, including NVL (-3.50%), DXG (-2.22%), DIG (-1.89%), and CEO (-1.71%).
The energy sector was the weakest-performing group, down 3.71%. Several energy names fell, including BSR (-4.49%), PLX (-3.33%), PVS (-3.23%), PVD (-2.77%), OIL (-2.72%), PVT (-4.89%), after oil prices dropped sharply.
On the HNX, the index finished mixed: HNX-Index fell 0.7 points to 247.76, while UPCoM-Index rose 0.53 points to 128.18.
Total market turnover reached around 31.7 trillion dong, with VN-Index reclaiming above 30 trillion. Foreign investors traded actively on both sides, with net selling of over 312 billion dong.
Net selling was led by FPT and ACB. On the buying side, MSN attracted net buying of over 376 billion dong, followed by GEX (over 144 billion) and VHM (about 111 billion).
The VN-Index opened higher and briefly surpassed 1,904 points before pulling back to around 1,897.39, up 6.19 points from the previous close. During the morning, shares across sectors turned green, with liquidity and turnover rising versus the previous day.
By late morning, VHM and VIC were the largest contributors, adding 1.24 and 0.83 points respectively. Liquidity improved further, with turnover exceeding 2.6 trillion dong by the same time.
There were 15 stocks that hit the floor, led by CTD in the afternoon session.
Overnight, U.S. stocks rose sharply following reports that the United States and Iran were nearing a deal to end the war. The S&P 500 advanced 1.46% to 7,365.12, the Nasdaq Composite rose 2.02%, and closed at new highs. The Dow Jones rose 612.34 points, or 1.24%, to 49,910.59.
Positive momentum also spilled into Asian markets this morning, with the Nikkei 225 up 5.67% and Hang Seng up 1.49% as of the time of reporting.
