The Ministry of Home Affairs said the 2026 holiday schedule for the Hung Kings’ Festival and the holidays on 30 April–1 May 2026 will be implemented in accordance with the 2019 Labour Code. The Ministry also stated there will be no substitution of working days for the 30 April holiday and International Labour Day on 1 May 2026.
The Ministry’s position was conveyed in Official Dispatch No. 3383/BNV-CVL sent to ministries, ministerial-level agencies, government bodies, and People’s Committees of provinces and centrally run cities.
The Ministry said recent information and public discussion had raised the possibility that civil servants, public employees, and workers might take several consecutive days off during the Hung Kings’ Festival, the 30 April holiday, and May Day (1/5/2026) by exchanging working days with weekly days off.
In response, the Ministry of Home Affairs said the 2026 holiday schedule for Hung Kings’ Day, the 30 April holiday, and International Labour Day (1/5) will be implemented strictly under the Labour Code 2019. It added that there is currently no plan to adjust the holiday schedule and no arrangement is proposed to swap working days to extend the break. As a result, there is no plan to swap to create a 9-day break during this period.
The Ministry asked ministries, sectors, and localities to continue implementing the holiday schedule in line with the Labour Code, and to notify and coordinate with relevant agencies.
Earlier, on 3 April, at a press briefing on the Month of Action on Occupational Safety and Health 2026, Mr. Vu Trong Binh, Director of the Employment Department (Ministry of Home Affairs), said the days off for 2026 had been permitted by the Government and that the Ministry issued a notice in October 2025.
He said the process of implementing the days off under the Labour Code was consulted with ministries, sectors, and unions at all levels, and that “to date, the Government and the Ministry of Home Affairs have not adopted any new policy regarding the notice on days off in 2026.”
On 8 April, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor conducted a broad consultation with members, civil servants, and workers on the plan to arrange days off for the Hung Kings’ Festival and the 30/04–1/5 holiday in 2026.
As of 7:00 a.m. on 9 April, the survey recorded more than 70,000 responses. About 62% supported the plan to swap compensatory days off, including 47.04% who said they “strongly desired” the swap and 14.82% who “desired” it. The Ministry noted that the majority of workers want the swap to lengthen the break to rest, recuperate, and care for family life.
On the evening of 10 April, the Ministry issued an official notice on the holiday schedule for the Hung Kings’ Festival and the 30/4–1/5 holiday in 2026.
