The Pi Network Core Team has announced a Mainnet upgrade that requires all node operators worldwide to migrate to Protocol 23 before May 15 in order to remain connected. The upgrade is positioned as a key step to improve the Pi Network ecosystem by adding native smart contract capabilities, with the goal of supporting more applications and developer activity.
In its official statement, the Pi Core Team said the Protocol 23 migration is an important step to improve the Mainnet system. Because node operators help keep the network stable, the team emphasized that their timely participation is necessary for a smooth transition.
The Core Team also warned that the Protocol 23 upgrade is expected to take longer than previous migrations. It advised operators to plan ahead and begin early rather than waiting until the final days before the deadline. The team stated that all Mainnet nodes must complete the upgrade before May 15 to stay connected to the network.
Operators using older hardware or slower internet connections were specifically encouraged to start the process sooner. While the Core Team did not provide full technical details, the longer expected timeline suggests the update may involve major changes to node software or stored data.
The announcement has also drawn attention from outside the node operator community. Crypto commentator Dr. Altcoin said the upgrade reflects an important shift within the Pi ecosystem, aligning with a broader view among long-term supporters that the project’s progress depends more on technical delivery than short-term token price movements.
Node operators are instructed to log in to their node dashboards and follow the official upgrade steps provided by the Pi Core Team. Users who do not run nodes but hold PI tokens were advised to monitor official Pi Network channels for further updates as the May 15 deadline approaches.
In the open market, Pi (PI) is trading near $0.179. The price remains under pressure after falling from its March 14 Pi Day high of $0.29.
Token unlocks are another factor highlighted in the update. Around 184.5 million PI is expected to enter circulation in May, which could increase selling pressure. June is expected to bring a smaller unlock amount of 83.8 million tokens, described as the lowest monthly total of 2026 so far.

Long-term memberships are shrinking, margins are pressured by higher rents and facility expenses, and competition from smaller, more personalized…
