On May 8, the Quảng Ngãi Provincial Tax Department issued a warning about impersonation schemes in which individuals pose as tax officers to contact households and self-employed individuals in order to commit fraud.
The Tax Authority said criminals have recently exploited a 15-day outreach campaign intended to promote and assist households and self-employed individuals, using it as cover to carry out impersonation activities. The scheme has appeared at multiple Tax Offices, creating confusion among taxpayers and posing risks to information security and assets.
Based on reports from taxpayers, the suspects typically use unfamiliar phone numbers, claim to be tax officers, and urge households and self-employed individuals to go to the Tax Office for “urgent procedures.” In some cases, they also request information related to bank accounts, tax codes, or even ask for money transfers to “complete the procedures.”
The Tax Authority stated that it does not conduct work by phone that asks taxpayers to provide sensitive information or transfer money. If a meeting is required, the Tax Office will issue an official written notice or use official electronic channels.
To avoid being exploited, households and self-employed individuals are advised not to share personal information or banking details with strangers and not to transfer money upon request via phone or social networks. Citizens are also urged to carefully verify information when receiving suspicious calls.
The Tax Authority further recommended that taxpayers stay vigilant and proactively protect personal information while fulfilling tax duties. If signs of fraud are detected, people should promptly notify the authorities for timely handling.
