Anthropic, the artificial intelligence safety company behind the Claude family of large language models, is considering raising fresh capital at a valuation of more than $900 billion—about $50 billion higher than previously touted figures.
Multiple reports, led by Bloomberg, say the San Francisco-based company has received several preemptive offers to raise around $50 billion at a valuation in the $850 billion to $900 billion range. The discussions are described as very early stage, with no offers yet accepted.
If the round proceeds at the reported valuation, it would more than double Anthropic’s current worth and could make it the most valuable AI startup globally. It would also surpass OpenAI, which was valued at $852 billion in March, as the world’s most valuable AI startup.
TechCrunch reported that a board meeting in May is expected to produce a definitive decision on whether to proceed and on the terms. The fundraising effort comes ahead of a potential initial public offering, which Bloomberg reported could be launched as soon as October.
Anthropic’s most recent funding round, completed in February, raised $30 billion at a valuation of $380 billion.
The reported pace of valuation growth is linked to a sharp increase in commercial momentum. Earlier this month, the company said it has reached $30 billion in annualised revenue, compared with roughly $10 billion generated across the whole of the prior year.
Reports attribute part of Anthropic’s momentum to the breakout success of Claude Code, its AI coding assistant. The company has also benefited from major infrastructure commitments from its largest backers.
Competitive pressure appears to be affecting both sides. As Anthropic has gained momentum, OpenAI has reportedly missed some of its own targets for revenue and user growth. OpenAI has also moved to streamline its product portfolio around AI agents and new model development.
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees and has built a suite of AI tools aimed at helping businesses handle tasks ranging from coding to cybersecurity.
Previously, the company resisted investor proposals at valuations of $800 billion or more. However, sources cited by TechCrunch said it is becoming increasingly difficult for Anthropic to resist additional capital in what could be its final round of private fundraising before a public listing.
Anthropic has declined to comment on the latest investment round.
