Recently, many users have become targets of a sophisticated scam campaign in which criminals impersonate Vietcombank staff or the bank’s automated call center system. By offering incentives to open a credit card, the fraudsters aim to steal personal information and seize the assets of unsuspecting customers.
According to information from Vietcombank, the most common tactic is that customers unexpectedly receive calls or messages via SMS, Zalo, or Messenger from people claiming to be bank employees. The criminals also use technology to impersonate the greeting of an automated call center, informing the customer that they are eligible to issue a credit card and instructing them to press 1 or 0 to connect with a representative.
After the victim follows the instruction, the line is disconnected. The fraudsters then call back using a personal phone number to continue luring the victim.
Some fraudulent numbers reported by many users include:
Once the victim’s trust is established, the impersonator persuades the customer to register for issuing a non-physical debit card or to file online for a credit card. During the process, they request highly sensitive security information, including the card image, the digits printed on the card, the cardholder name, OTP codes, and in some cases CCCD (citizen identification card) details, biometric data, or the login password for the VCB Digibank app.
With this information, the fraudsters link the victim’s card to their own e-wallets or conduct online payments on e-commerce platforms to launder assets by purchasing high-value items such as iPhone or MacBook.
They may also fabricate reasons to extract money directly from the victim, such as claiming the customer must transfer funds to pay processing or issuance fees, or to “raise the credit score” to qualify for a card.
The key rule is to never disclose security information for any services, including card data, app passwords, or OTP codes, to anyone. Vietcombank states that the bank never requests customers to provide these data in any form.
Customers should also avoid clicking suspicious links or scanning QR codes of unclear origin sent via messages or emails, because Vietcombank does not send login links through these channels. All transactions or inquiries should be conducted through Vietcombank’s official channels.
To verify legitimacy, customers can check for the secure lock icon on the official website or the green check on the bank’s Facebook Fanpage.
If assistance is needed, Vietcombank advises contacting the hotline directly: 1900545413 for ordinary customers, 18001565 for priority customers, or using the dedicated care specialist feature in the VCB Digibank app.
