Gasoline and diesel prices in Europe have risen sharply in recent months amid a global energy price shock linked to the war between the United States and Israel. However, fuel costs across EU member states are not uniform.
European Commission data show that from the end of February to early April 2026, EU gasoline prices rose by 14% and diesel prices increased by 30%.
Euronews, citing the European Commission’s weekly oil price report published on 2 April, put the EU average price for Euro-95 unleaded gasoline at 1.871 euros per liter and diesel at 2.076 euros per liter as of 30 March.
Diesel prices were highest in the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany. The Netherlands recorded diesel at 2.46 euros per liter, while Denmark and Germany posted 2.36 and 2.29 euros per liter, respectively.
Diesel prices above the EU average were also reported in Finland, Belgium, Austria, France, Ireland, Sweden, Lithuania and Greece.
By contrast, Malta, Hungary and Slovenia recorded the lowest diesel prices. Malta stood out at 1.21 euros per liter, far below other countries. Hungary, Slovenia and Bulgaria had diesel prices around 1.62 euros per liter, while diesel remained below 2 euros per liter in Slovakia, Spain, Cyprus, Croatia and Czechia.
Gasoline (Euro-super 95) followed a similar pattern, with the highest and lowest prices concentrated in the same countries. In the Netherlands, gasoline reached 2.33 euros per liter, while Denmark and Germany posted 2.23 and 2.13 euros per liter, respectively. Greece and France also recorded gasoline prices above 2 euros per liter.
Malta had the lowest gasoline price at 1.34 euros per liter, followed by Bulgaria at 1.44 euros per liter.
Beyond gasoline and diesel, average LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) prices in the EU stood at 0.841 euros per liter. The lowest LPG price was recorded in Italy at 0.66 euros per liter, while Croatia had the highest at 1.26 euros per liter.
Comparing fuel prices before and after the US–Israel confrontation, gasoline in Europe rose from 1.64 euros per liter on 23 February to 1.87 euros per liter on 30 March, a 14% increase.
Diesel increased from 1.59 euros per liter to 2.08 euros per liter over the same period, representing a 30% rise.
A large share of fuel prices in Europe is driven by taxes. As of 16 March 2026, taxes accounted for 44.6% of diesel prices and 52.1% of gasoline prices in the region.
Slovenia had the highest tax rate on gasoline at 54.8%, while Bulgaria had the lowest at 43.9%. For diesel, Malta had the highest tax rate at 54.3%, while Estonia had the lowest at 37.6%.
