Late on June 20 (Vietnam time), Iran’s Central Command announced it had closed the Hormuz Strait following attacks by Israel on southern Lebanon, describing the move as a violation of a treaty between Iran and the United States. The announcement came after Israeli strikes across southern Lebanon and the Beqaa Valley earlier the same day, where both areas are described as Hezbollah strongholds.
Lebanese state news agency NNA reported that Israeli fighter jets and unmanned aircraft attacked sites across southern Lebanon and the Beqaa Valley on June 20. The Lebanese Civil Defense said at least 16 people were killed in the Israeli strikes.
In parallel, an Israeli military official accused Hezbollah of firing more than 50 rounds at Israeli forces in southern Lebanon overnight. Israel said it attacked targets it described as Hezbollah in response.
Israel said it remained committed to the ceasefire but would continue to act against any threat to Israel or its forces. Hezbollah, in a statement, said it confronted Israeli forces attempting to move into the Ali al-Taher hill area in southern Lebanon overnight. A senior Hezbollah official told Reuters that Hezbollah would not allow Israeli forces freedom of movement on Lebanese soil.
Hezbollah’s statement reiterated that the group remained committed to the ceasefire but would respond to any attempt by Israel to widen the territory it controls.
The attacks followed not long after the Hezbollah-Israel ceasefire agreement took effect on June 19. The Lebanon ceasefire is described as a condition to commence 60-day negotiations between the United States and Iran to secure a more durable deal to reopen the Hormuz Strait and stabilize global oil supplies. It was not yet clear when the talks would begin.
Switzerland said it would maintain a discreet and trusted environment at the Buergenstock mountain resort to facilitate discussions.
In an interview with Fox News, U.S. Vice President JD Vance said U.S.-Iran negotiations could take place on June 21. U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner—son-in-law of President Donald Trump—have traveled to Switzerland to meet the Iranian delegation.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei also confirmed that the Iranian delegation would depart for Switzerland on June 20. He said: “In Switzerland, we intend to press the other side to meet their commitments and clarify their action plans regarding those obligations,” adding that if the United States refuses to fulfill its commitments, Iran will respond with necessary measures.
