A man in Hanoi believed online advertisements for cheap flight tickets and transferred 30 million VND, after which the recipient cut off contact and stole the money. With holidays such as Hung Kings’ Day, Reunification Day (April 30)–May 1, and the peak summer travel season in 2026, travel and leisure demand rises. Scammers exploit this period by posing as tour operators and selling cheap airline tickets on social networks. Recently, the Hanoi Police Department for Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention received a report from a victim who was cheated when buying airline tickets online. The victim, identified as D., a resident of Hanoi, needed to travel and contacted a fan page advertising cheap tickets. The person claimed to be a collaborator of an airline, promised discounted tickets, and requested upfront payment. Trusting the offer, D. paid 30 million VND to secure the tickets. After receiving the money, the offender immediately cut contact and stole all funds. The Hanoi authorities noted that this is not a new tactic, but many people still fall for it due to the lure of cheap prices and insufficient information verification. To prevent such fraud, authorities advise choosing reputable service providers, conducting transactions through official websites, apps, or official agents. People should be cautious of unusually cheap offers, should not transfer money before verifying information, and should never share OTP codes, passwords, or bank account details with anyone; avoid clicking suspicious links or installing apps from unknown sources. If signs of fraud are detected, individuals should promptly report to the nearest police authority for assistance and action as required.
