Meta AI surged into the top 5 of the US App Store within a day after Meta released its latest AI model, Muse Spark, on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. Appfigures data shows the app climbed 52 ranks overnight, a rare jump for the store. Sensor Tower estimates Meta AI generated about 46,000 iOS downloads in the US on April 8, up 87% from the previous day. On Android, downloads rose more modestly, increasing 3% over the same period.
Muse Spark is Meta’s next-generation AI model, positioned as a significant upgrade over earlier Llama 4 versions. It is the first product led by Alexandr Wang, head of Meta Superintelligence Labs, who was recruited from Scale AI last year to reshape Meta’s AI strategy.
Meta says the model can take multiple input types, including voice, text, and images. It is optimized for practical tasks such as answering health questions, assisting with thinking in science and mathematics, and helping users build websites or small games from brief descriptions. Meta also says the app can run multiple agents simultaneously to handle complex queries.
Beyond the standalone app, Meta plans to roll out Muse Spark to other platforms in the coming weeks, including WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and Meta’s AI smart glasses.
Alongside the Muse Spark release, Meta AI on mobile and web received a redesigned interface and new features, including switching between modes to match different usage needs. Alexandr Wang posted the updated ranking on X on Thursday morning, adding that downloads were still increasing.
Despite the jump, Meta AI was not yet able to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. As of the update, Meta AI remained at number 5 on the US App Store, behind ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
Meta has invested heavily in AI talent recruitment and in Scale AI, including $14.3 billion in Scale AI. To date, Meta AI has been downloaded approximately 60.5 million times globally across the App Store and Google Play, with 25 million downloads occurring in 2026 alone.
India is currently Meta AI’s largest market, followed by the United States, Brazil, Pakistan, and Mexico.
