Microsoft has released a list of 40 occupations with the highest and lowest risk of AI replacement, based on a study analyzing interactions between users and Bing Copilot. The study used about 200,000 conversations to map AI’s impact and introduced an "AI applicability score" reflecting how much AI can assist or perform tasks in a given job.
The results indicate that the highest-risk occupations are mainly office tasks involving writing, reading, summarizing, analyzing and conveying information.
A Microsoft study analyzed roughly 200,000 conversations between users and Bing Copilot to compute an AI applicability score. The results focus on large language models (LLMs) such as Copilot. The study emphasizes that the rankings reflect AI usage in supporting or performing tasks, not a forecast of job cuts.
The 40 most at-risk jobs include:
Microsoft notes that most of these roles share common elements: reading, writing, data analysis, communication or content creation—areas where generative AI models like Copilot or ChatGPT are developing rapidly. In contrast, jobs requiring direct human interaction, operation of machinery, or working in real-world environments are less affected. The rankings reflect AI usage, not a forecast of workforce reductions.
In many cases, AI serves as an assistant to raise productivity rather than replacing people entirely. The study focuses on large language models (LLMs) such as Copilot. In the future, as AI combines with robotics and specialized automation systems, even roles currently deemed less affected could change. No job is completely immune to AI, but those relying heavily on language, information processing and communication are the most affected.
