David Schwartz, CTO Emeritus of Ripple, issued a public warning about an active phishing campaign targeting Robinhood users. In a post shared on his social media accounts, Schwartz included screenshots of a fraudulent email he personally received, which simulated an official security notification from the platform.
Schwartz said the scheme is more sophisticated than typical fraud attempts. The malicious messages appear to have been sent through Robinhood’s own notification system, making them “virtually indistinguishable” from legitimate communications.
According to Schwartz, the email contained elements commonly associated with real security alerts, including login data, device information, and a prompt to review account changes.
Schwartz noted that early evidence suggests the attackers were able to inject malicious content into Robinhood’s notification system. He said this currently rules out the hypothesis of a direct hack of the company’s infrastructure.
Community responses reflected concern about how a platform of Robinhood’s scale could have its official email system compromised. Schwartz did not confirm a definitive response from the company, but his warning was clear: even emails that appear completely legitimate should not be treated as trustworthy at this time.
