The Việt Hưng – Cầu Bây canal project, combined with the Cự Khối reservoir, with total investment of over 972 billion VND, is being accelerated by contractors to complete the drainage system in Long Biên district. The project is led by the Long Biên Ward Project Investment – Infrastructure Management Board and is expected to be completed in January 2027.
The project covers about 38.3 hectares, with the Cự Khối reservoir accounting for more than 30 hectares. It includes the Việt Hưng – Cầu Bây canal system and surrounding ditches, with a total canal length of over 2.6 km and widths ranging from nearly 20 m to 30 m.
Beyond excavation and canal construction, the project also includes supporting infrastructure such as promenades, drainage works, greenery, lighting, embankments, railings, cross culverts, and regulating valves. Works both underground and above ground in the area are being relocated to facilitate construction and ensure synchronization upon completion.
On-site observations show that many areas have been leveled and shaped for the reservoir. Construction equipment is operating continuously across a wide area to support earthworks and material transport. The contractor said construction is organized around a 3 shifts, 4 crews plan to meet the schedule.
To date, the reservoir component has reached about 50% of its total work. Remaining tasks are being advanced to shorten the overall construction time.
Upon completion, the Cự Khối reservoir together with the Việt Hưng – Cầu Bảy canal will form a unified drainage collection, control, and discharge system for the area. The project is not designed to operate in isolation; it connects with other related works including the Cự Khối pumping station, the Long Biên – Cự Khối drainage line, and Thạch Bàn lake park.
The series of works is expected to significantly enhance flood drainage capacity for the eastern part of Hanoi. Instead of relying on separate sewer lines, the new system will enable coordinated flow control across the area, helping reduce pressure during heavy rainfall.
In addition to drainage functions, the Cự Khối reservoir is also planned to become a landscape space, improving the environment and serving residents’ recreational needs.
