Ripple USD (RLUSD), the Ripple stablecoin, has undergone another large token burn on the Ethereum network. While RLUSD operates natively on both the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and Ethereum, the latest activity involves tokens being permanently removed from circulation on Ethereum.
The Ripple stablecoin tracker account on X announced the burning of 40 million RLUSD. According to the report, these tokens were permanently removed from circulation and sent to inactive wallet addresses.
For a fully backed stablecoin like RLUSD, token burns are generally considered a normal mechanism rather than a negative development. When large holders redeem RLUSD for U.S. dollars from Ripple’s reserves, the corresponding tokens must be destroyed.
Burning helps ensure the circulating supply matches the fiat reserves held in the bank. It is the opposite of minting, which occurs when Ripple issues fresh RLUSD tokens.
The 40 million RLUSD burn is described as part of a broader series of burns reported on the same day. U.Today reported that Ripple executed an additional 30 million RLUSD burn across two transactions.
Over the last seven days, the RLUSD Treasury has burned a total of 45 million RLUSD while minting 10 million RLUSD.
The article notes that frequent burns paired with mints typically point to active institutional usage and liquidity management. This process is presented as a way to maintain trustworthiness and compliance—factors highlighted as important for enterprise adoption.
