Texas Gov. Greg Abbott unveiled a five-point plan aimed at reforming the state’s property tax system and providing additional relief to homeowners. The Republican governor presented the proposal Wednesday during a Taxpayer Empowerment event in Houston, positioning the overhaul as a central element of his re-election campaign for a fourth term.
Abbott said the plan would impose tougher limits on local government spending and implement tighter caps on property appraisals. He described the reforms as part of an effort to reduce the overall property tax burden on residents.
According to Abbott, the plan is intended to eventually eliminate school district property taxes on homeowners.
In comments carried by Fox News Digital, Abbott argued that Texas remains a top performer on economic measures and said the reforms are designed to keep the state competitive.
“Texas is the state that's most on fire in the entire United States of America. If you look at our economy, we're ranked No. 1 for jobs, No. 1 for economic development, No. 1 for doing business,” Abbott said.
“What our goal is is to make sure we continue to pass policies that keep Texas attractive, and that's why today I talked about my reforms to make sure we slash property taxes in Texas.”
