In Q1 2026, Vietnam’s agriculture, forestry and fisheries sector continued to grow, supported by improved production indicators. The period saw continued highlights including a decline in rice area, a sharp rise in high-value crops, a recovery in pig farming, and expansion in aquaculture.
As of March 20, 2026, Vietnam had sown 2,915.2 thousand hectares of winter-spring rice, down 37.3 thousand hectares from the winter-spring 2025 season. The northern region reached 1,020.1 thousand hectares (down 13.4 thousand hectares), while the southern region reached 1,895.1 thousand hectares (down 23.9 thousand hectares). The Mekong Delta accounted for 1,240.7 thousand hectares, down 24.8 thousand hectares.
Several localities recorded sharp declines, including Can Tho (down 14.8 thousand hectares), Dong Thap (down 6.2 thousand hectares), Bac Ninh (down 3.1 thousand hectares), An Giang (down 3.0 thousand hectares), Hanoi (down nearly 1.4 thousand hectares), Hung Yen (down 1.3 thousand hectares), Tuyen Quang (down 0.9 thousand hectares) and Phu Tho (down 0.5 thousand hectares). The main reason cited was the conversion of low-efficiency paddy land to other crops, aquaculture, or infrastructure development.
In the Mekong Delta, the area harvested for early winter-spring rice reached 466.8 thousand hectares, accounting for 37.6% of sown area (down 28.4 thousand hectares). Yield rose to 73.5 quintals/ha (up 0.7 quintals/ha), while production reached 9.1 million tons (down 99.3 thousand tons).
For the 2025–2026 autumn-winter rice crop, the sowing area reached 182.3 thousand hectares, down 9.4 thousand hectares. Of this, 6.9 thousand hectares were converted to aquaculture, 0.4 thousand hectares to other crops, and about 2.2 thousand hectares were left fallow. Yield increased to 53.5 quintals/ha (up 0.8 quintals/ha), but production fell to 975.3 thousand tons (down 34.5 thousand tons).
The high-quality rice model area covered 368.1 thousand hectares, accounting for 29.7% of total area, up 3.7% versus the same period last year. In the model, production costs decreased by 15.0%–21.0%, while average profit was about 29.6 million VND/ha, higher by 4.7 million VND/ha than traditional farming.
In March 2026, rough rice prices in the Mekong Delta declined year-on-year: An Giang down 3.7%, Ca Mau down 4.2%, Can Tho down 4.4%, and Dong Thap and Vinh Long down 7.8%.
According to the Statistics Office, Q1/2026 output from perennial crops performed fairly well, with prices of key agricultural products remaining high. This encouraged farmers to expand scale and invest in crop care. The management of planting area codes and packaging facility codes for export was also actively implemented. By the reporting date, 9,357 planting area codes and 1,381 packaging facility codes had been approved for exporting fresh fruits (including dragon fruit, mango, star apple, bananas, grapefruit, passion fruit, seedless lime, jackfruit, lychee, longan, peppers, among others) to markets such as China, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Korea and Japan.
In livestock, the buffalo herd declined in several localities, including Phu Tho (down 4.8%), Tuyen Quang (down 3.4%), Dien Bien (down 0.8%), Lao Cai (down 0.5%) and Nghe An (down 0.4%). By contrast, cattle numbers rose in Gia Lai (up 8.0%), Lam Dong (up 7.5%), Dong Nai and Phu Tho (up 3.2%), and Ho Chi Minh City (up 3.1%).
By March 30, 2026, Vietnam reported no remaining outbreaks of blue-ear disease and foot-and-mouth disease. Avian influenza outbreaks remained in Nghe An and Da Nang; lumpy skin disease remained in Da Nang and Quang Ngai; and African swine fever remained in 21 localities that had not yet passed 21 days.
