Production of bean sprouts using the toxin 6-Benzylaminopurine (6-BAP) has led to criminal proceedings in Lao Cai, authorities said, after police uncovered a facility supplying toxic sprouts to wholesale markets.
On April 4, Lao Cai Provincial Police announced the indictment of Chu Thi Hoa (born 1990, from Phu Tho) for violating food safety regulations. The indictment decisions were approved by the Lao Cai Provincial People’s Prosecutor’s Office.
Police said that on March 29 they received a tip-off about a facility using toxic chemicals in bean sprout production. The Lao Cai Police Economic Crime Department investigated and conducted a search at Hoa’s bean sprout production site.
At the scene, authorities seized over 4 tonnes of commercial bean sprouts that were ready for transport to market.
Forensic results from the Institute of Forensic Science (Ministry of Public Security) determined that the bean sprouts contained 6-BAP, a chemical not permitted for use in food processing and harmful to human health.
Authorities said the use of 6-BAP could cause serious health effects, including liver, kidney, and lung damage, and a risk of death with prolonged exposure.
In interrogation, Hoa admitted using 6-BAP during production when the sprouts were two days old to accelerate growth. She said the chemical made the sprouts plumper, more attractive, easier to sell, and more competitive in the market.
On average, Hoa produced between 700 kg and over 1 tonne per day of bean sprouts containing 6-BAP. The sprouts were mainly supplied to wholesale markets in Vinh Phuc, Son Tay (Hanoi), and part of Lao Cai.
Hoa stated that from January 2024 to March, the facility produced about 510 tonnes of bean sprouts using the toxic chemical and sold them on the market.
The case is currently under further investigation by the Lao Cai Police.
