Apple is reportedly preparing a major upgrade for iOS 27 and macOS 27, with a focus on AI-powered photo editing and a redesigned Siri that functions more like a chatbot. The changes are expected to strengthen Apple’s on-device AI capabilities, particularly as Android handset makers expand their AI features.
According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Apple plans to add a dedicated AI tools area in the Photos app, introducing three new features designed to make editing easier on-device and help narrow the gap with competitors.
The first feature would allow users to expand an image by generating additional content outside the original borders. Gurman describes use cases such as taking a close-up photo of a building and adding surrounding scenery to complete the shot. The system would run an on-device AI model to infer and fill in missing areas so the added content harmonizes with the original image, with users able to drag an edge to choose how much expansion to keep.
The second feature would automatically improve image quality by adjusting lighting and color to produce a more balanced result, reducing the need for manual multi-step edits.
The third feature would target depth-enabled photos, which store depth information. With this capability, users could change perspective or composition after capture, creating a more three-dimensional sense in the final image.
Gurman also notes that development of the image-expansion and framing tools has not gone smoothly, and that unresolved issues could delay the release.
Beyond Photos, Apple’s upcoming update is also expected to bring a major change to Siri. The new version is described as having a clearly defined chatbot style and deeper operating-system integration.
Gurman previously reported that the updated Siri could use personal data to respond more appropriately, perform tasks inside apps, search the web, create content including images, assist with coding, summarize and analyze information, and upload files when needed. Apple is also said to be developing the ability for Siri to view open windows and on-screen content, enabling adjustments to features or device settings, and to handle multi-command requests within a single prompt.
A key element of the new Siri is said to be its operating infrastructure, which is described as being based on an AI-dedicated processor and Google’s cloud system, under Apple’s control. The report says Apple would maintain existing privacy protections.
On the model, Gurman says the newer Siri is likely to use a more advanced version of Gemini, internally referred to as Apple Foundation Models version 11. He adds that this version is expected to be competitive with Gemini 3 and substantially stronger than the model powering current Siri improvements.
Apple is also reportedly changing how users access Siri. Instead of relying only on voice activation, Apple plans to release a dedicated Siri app on iOS 27 that stores all previous conversations with the assistant.
The Siri app is expected to include an Extensions section to connect with third-party agents such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude, allowing users to extend capabilities from those services. The App Store could also host a dedicated area for compatible extensions that users can install.
In addition to voice activation or a physical button, Apple is testing a new Siri interface in a dynamic area at the top of the screen.
Apple is also said to aim to gradually replace Spotlight as a search tool, moving toward a more unified search interface. The approach would still show app-related suggestions, upcoming appointments, and AI-suggested setting changes.
