On April 28, the tech giant Google held a groundbreaking ceremony for the company's largest AI center outside the United States, marking a significant step in its strategy to expand its digital infrastructure in India. Earlier in October 2025, Google committed to investing $15 billion over five years to build a large-scale complex in Visakhapatnam, a port city in Andhra Pradesh, India. During the ceremony, Bikash Koley, Google's Vice President of Global Infrastructure, said this is 'the first concrete milestone in Google's largest commitment to India's digital future.' The $15 billion project aims to build a comprehensive AI ecosystem, with a focus on a gigawatt-scale data center hub designed to meet the enormous compute needs of the AI era, serving services such as Gemini and Google Search. Andhra Pradesh IT official Nara Lokesh expects the project to help make Andhra Pradesh a leading AI and deep-tech hub in India. According to Koley, developing Andhra Pradesh into a gateway for international submarine cables will help diversify existing connections in Mumbai and Chennai, thereby boosting the country's digital infrastructure capabilities and strengthening economic security. Andhra Pradesh is also intended to become a landing point for submarine cables connecting India with Singapore. Additionally, new strategic submarine cables will continue to enhance connections between India and the rest of the world. Globally, data centers are growing rapidly due to the vast data storage demand and the energy-intensive operation of AI tools. Koley emphasized: 'This is a watershed moment for India, for Andhra Pradesh, and for Google as well.'
