Google Vids has upgraded its AI video tool by adding new video and music-generation models, along with controllable avatars designed to improve consistency across scenes. The update also includes new ways to capture footage and publish AI-generated videos directly to YouTube.
The most notable change is the integration of Veo 3.1, a new video model aimed at improving realism and coherence. Google says Vids is intended for mainstream use cases such as promotional videos, greeting cards, or short-form content, rather than professional film production.
Google Vids remains free to use, but with monthly generation limits for non-subscribed accounts. A non-subscribed account is limited to 10 videos per month. The AI Pro plan allows 50 videos per month, while the AI Ultra plan allows up to 1,000 videos per month.
Created videos currently run about 8 seconds and are generated at 720p resolution.
Google has also integrated Lyria, an AI music-generation model. Users can generate music segments by describing the desired mood, without needing to provide lyrics. The tool supports music lengths of 30 seconds or 3 minutes, and paying users receive higher usage limits.
To improve consistency, Google adds pre-made AI avatars to Vids, available in both realistic and animated styles. The avatars are designed to maintain appearance and voice across scenes and can perform actions or interactions based on user requests.
Google has launched a Chrome browser extension that enables screen recording or quick camera capture without opening Vids. Users can then edit the resulting video further on the platform.
Videos created on Vids, including AI-generated content, can be published directly to YouTube without downloading and re-uploading. By default, videos are private, and users can adjust sharing settings.
Google says all of the new features have now been deployed on Google Vids.
