Grab Vietnam has announced the launch of an Electric Vehicle Utility feature for driver partners, integrating charging-station systems from multiple providers into a single experience within the Grab Driver app. The feature allows drivers to search for charging stations, charge, and pay without using separate charging applications.
With Electric Vehicle Utility, drivers using fully electric or hybrid cars can access charging services nationwide through the Grab Driver app. Drivers can tap the feature icon to view charging options anytime, without additional registrations or logging into provider-specific apps. The utility also removes the need to preload funds into multiple charging apps, addressing concerns about tied-up funds across different wallets.
Grab said information on charging stations and the real-time status of each charger is displayed in the app, enabling drivers to choose locations that match their needs.
Grab Vietnam cited results from a survey of drivers using electric cars, highlighting several barriers to charging.
In the initial phase, the Electric Vehicle Utility feature on the Grab Driver app is provided by Voltality, described as an interoperable mobility network in Southeast Asia. Voltality said it has built a platform connecting more than 20 charging-station providers with over 15,000 charging points across Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.
Grab Vietnam CEO Ma Tuan Trong said the launch is an “important step” in Grab’s green transformation strategy, adding that it aims to address barriers faced by driver partners using EVs and help them experience seamless charging with greater confidence.
Voltality CEO Kristofer Jacek Soh said that to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles, charging convenience must be comparable to, or better than, refueling with gasoline. He added that expanding charging infrastructure is necessary, but that the key is helping drivers locate, navigate to, and use charging stations in an optimal way.
Grab said it will explore extending Electric Vehicle Utility to two-wheeler drivers in Vietnam in the future.
