Hue is moving toward its goal of becoming Vietnam’s leading green tourism city through coordinated measures across environmental protection, tourism infrastructure, and the management of tourism activities. The city’s efforts focus on reducing plastic waste and developing sustainable tourism models.
Hue is intensifying implementation of a plan to minimize plastic waste, aiming to build the image of a destination with no plastic waste.
Alongside this, the city continues to invest in and upgrade environmental protection infrastructure. Authorities prioritize the construction and installation of public toilets, on-site wastewater treatment systems, and waste collection, transport, and processing facilities. Water supply stations have been placed at many historic sites, parks, and tourist areas to encourage visitors to use personal water bottles and help reduce plastic waste.
The Community Toilet program is being rolled out widely, with a focus on key areas, especially in the inner city. The city says expanding the model improves service quality and helps build an image of a civilized, visitor-friendly urban environment.
At eco-tourism sites such as streams, waterfalls, and beaches, environmental protection is strengthened. Management agencies regularly arrange cleaning staff and form teams to inspect and supervise waste collection and disposal. The city also emphasizes controlling liquid waste at the source to minimize negative impacts on the natural ecosystem.
Cycling awareness campaigns were conducted at the event “Hue – Developing Green Heritage Tourism & City of Bikes.”
In addition to infrastructure measures, Hue issues and publicly posts environmental protection regulations for public places, requiring organizations and individuals to strictly comply. Inspections and monitoring are intensified to detect and address violations promptly, supporting broader public awareness of preserving green, clean, sustainable tourism.
Beyond environmental protection, Hue is gradually developing a green transportation system to serve tourism. The city promotes expanded pedestrian streets and the development of public bicycles and electric vehicles to reduce emissions and noise while offering visitors a quieter, closer experience.
Riverside routes along the Perfume River, central areas, and heritage sites are guided toward non-emitting transportation such as bicycles and electric vehicles. Hue says this approach supports environmental protection while helping preserve the calm, distinctive character of the heritage city.
The city also encourages tourism businesses and lodging facilities to switch to environmentally friendly transportation and raises awareness among residents and visitors about choosing green mobility options.
Hue is finalizing mechanisms and policies to support environmental protection in tourism. The city emphasizes developing reward policies to honor individuals and organizations that make positive contributions to promoting responsibility within the community.
Operations at tourist sites are managed strictly to ensure they remain civilized and consistent with the landscape. For passenger transport such as cycle rickshaws and hand-drawn carts, Hue aims to regulate services under a cooperative or clearly registered enterprise model to professionalize operations.
The city operates waiting stations and free water machines to encourage habits that reduce single-use plastic bottles.
Security forces are strengthened through the installation of cameras and environmental sensors at key locations including Dai Noi Hue, Dong Ba Market, the Perfume River, and Lang Co beach. The monitoring is intended to support safety and environmental management while curbing negative behaviors such as touting and littering.
Hue also promotes information transparency and price monitoring by requiring price postings at sightseeing spots and service facilities. A hotline has been announced for receiving and addressing visitor feedback.
Hue is building a set of green tourism criteria as a foundation for promoting sustainable development, linking environmental protection, heritage preservation, and responsible travel trends.
The city says it has strengthened the application of digital technology in tourism management, enabling visitors to report environmental violations, search for eco-friendly destinations, and contribute to greater transparency and service quality.
Hue also supports tourism businesses and lodging facilities to implement digital transformation in a green direction. The city invests in intelligent monitoring systems at key tourism sites to monitor environmental quality and visitor flow and to handle overload situations promptly, aiming to build a safe, civilized, and sustainable tourism environment.
