In recent years, the trend of no-makeup makeup—makeup that looks as if you are not wearing makeup—has grown in popularity. Instead of heavy, mask-like base layers, a naturally radiant, even-toned complexion is becoming the new standard.
Makeup artist Hiromi Ueda, one of Giorgio Armani Beauty’s global artists, says that achieving a skin-like foundation look depends not only on products, but also on skincare preparation, how much foundation is used, and the technique used to apply it. When these steps are done correctly, the base becomes less of a covering layer and more of a blend with the skin.
For a naturally dewy base, Ueda recommends hydrating the skin before foundation. She suggests soaking toner onto a few cotton pads, then applying them to the driest areas of the face for 5–10 minutes before applying foundation. She describes this as a small trick that can help the skin stay hydrated and ready for a smoother base.

Ueda emphasizes that preparation is foundational to the makeup process. She recommends applying moisturizer from the center of the face using gentle movements, then blending outward toward the ears, eyebrows, and hairline with circular motions using the fingertips. For the neck, she advises massaging downward to support circulation and relax muscles. For the chin area, she suggests lightly massaging with the fingertips to help define facial contours more clearly.
While some trends mix foundation with other products, Ueda recommends a straightforward method: mix foundation with a small amount of concealer directly on the back of the hand, then apply using a flat brush or sponge. She says this helps the base blend more evenly, creating a smooth, polished look without a heavy or cakey feel.

Ueda’s technique for a more dimensional look involves using two foundation tones. She recommends one shade that matches the natural skin tone at the center of the face, and a slightly darker shade around the perimeter to add depth. The goal is to avoid a flat appearance that can happen with a single shade.
