Three Democratic lawmakers urged President Trump to ban Chinese carmakers from producing in the United States. Beyond seeking to ban assembly of Chinese cars in the U.S., the lawmakers also proposed that cars manufactured by Chinese brands in Mexico or Canada should not be imported into the world's largest economy. Senators Tammy Baldwin, Elissa Slotkin, and Chuck Schumer cited remarks by President Donald Trump in January in Detroit that he was willing for Chinese carmakers to build plants in the United States. In a letter to Trump, the lawmakers wrote that it is important to clearly recognize that inviting Chinese automakers to establish operations in the United States would give them a substantial economic advantage. This could render American carmakers uncompetitive. At the same time, the lawmakers warned about triggering a national security crisis that would be hard to fix. Chinese cars have faced significant barriers in the U.S. market, including tariffs around 100%. However, recent surveys show American consumers are increasingly interested in these vehicles. Meanwhile, the White House argued that while the administration continues to attract investment to spur America's industrial revival, the idea that national security would be sacrificed for that is baseless and false. Earlier this year, Trump said he was willing for Chinese carmakers to produce cars in the United States. He commented at an event in Detroit that if Chinese firms want to come and build a plant, hire local workers, that would be great. Previously, the Biden administration imposed broad rules in January 2025 essentially prohibiting Chinese automakers from selling passenger cars in the United States. Washington cited concerns about national security related to the potential collection of sensitive user data. The ban has received strong support from U.S. automakers and groups in the auto sector. Last month, auto trade associations representing nearly all major automakers urged the U.S. government to continue blocking Chinese carmakers from entering the market on the eve of a planned May meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Earlier this week, Republican Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio said he would propose legislation to shut the U.S. market to ensure that there will never be a scenario where Chinese cars could enter the United States, whether in hardware, software, or cooperative relationships.
