According to Truong Xuan Commune Police in Dong Thap Province, authorities have recently noted that many households install home surveillance cameras but do not pay sufficient attention to security measures, creating information security risks.
By exploiting vulnerabilities in these devices, criminals may gain unauthorized access to camera systems to monitor family activities and collect photos and personal data.
Even more seriously, this information could be used for malicious purposes such as theft, extortion, or online dissemination, significantly affecting the privacy and safety of family members.
Truong Xuan Commune Police said the main cause is that many households use cameras from unclear origins or do not adequately address device security.
Common issues include:
These gaps make camera systems vulnerable to unauthorized access.
To reduce the risk of information security breaches, Truong Xuan Commune Police advise residents to choose devices with clear origins supplied by reputable providers.
Immediately after installation, residents should change the default password and use a high-security password that combines uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
Residents are also advised not to share camera management accounts with strangers and to regularly check and update device software to promptly fix security vulnerabilities.
For private areas of the home, when not strictly necessary, residents should turn off or cover cameras to limit the risk of leakage of image and personal data.
Truong Xuan Commune Police also note that if signs of camera intrusion are detected or there is suspicion of unauthorized surveillance, residents should promptly inform local police for support and timely handling.
