The CIA reportedly used a top-secret device, “Ghost Murmur,” for the first time to detect a heartbeat signal and locate a U.S. pilot stranded deep inside Iranian territory, enabling a rescue operation before dawn on 5 April.
The pilot, codenamed “Dude 44 Bravo,” was the weapons systems officer on an F-15E Strike Eagle shot down in the southwestern area of Isfahan on 3–4 April. Before taking cover, the officer activated an emergency beacon, but rescuers were unable to precisely locate him amid the vast and rugged terrain.
According to reporting cited in the article, the breakthrough came when the CIA deployed “Ghost Murmur,” described as capable of detecting ultra-weak electromagnetic signals emitted by a human heartbeat. The device is said to use quantum magnetometry, paired with artificial intelligence to filter noise and pinpoint the target’s position.
The article states that U.S. special forces found and retrieved the officer from the danger zone before dawn on 5 April, after the CIA’s deployment of the technology.
The article attributes development to Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works division. It also says the system had been tested on a Black Hawk helicopter and could be integrated into modern military platforms such as the F-35 in the future.
One source quoted in the article described the system’s capability as similar to “hearing a voice in a giant stadium,” allowing detection of signs of life within hundreds of square kilometers, particularly in environments with little electromagnetic interference such as deserts or remote mountain areas.
The article notes that “Ghost Murmur” has limitations. It reportedly works best in a “clean” environment with low interference and requires substantial data processing time.
U.S. officials have not officially confirmed details of the device. The article says CIA Director John Ratcliffe stated that the agency used advanced technologies that no other intelligence agency possesses in connection with the rescue operation.
The incident was likened to finding “a grain of sand in a desert,” but it concluded successfully, the article attributes to the combination of pilot survival training and the reported use of new military technology.
