TSMC will transform Arizona into the largest chip-manufacturing hub outside Taiwan, bringing a full supply chain to the United States. TSMC, the world's leading chip maker, is accelerating its plan to build a network of chip fabrication facilities in the United States at an unprecedented pace. A new report says TSMC aims to build a 'GigaFab' cluster in Arizona, with scale and output on par with its Taiwan facilities. According to DigiTimes, the plan in the US has exceeded expectations. Initially, TSMC planned to build a few plants, but it has since expanded to 12 plants—the same size as its Hsinchu, Taiwan network. The total investment by TSMC and Taiwan in the US is projected to reach about half a trillion dollars, underscoring the project's scale. Specifically, TSMC will add two wafer fabrication plants and two advanced chip-packaging plants in Arizona, bringing the total projects to 12. This shift includes TSMC's facilities and workforce, and it will draw suppliers along the supply chain. This means the entire chip manufacturing process will take place on US soil once these plants become operational. One of the biggest challenges facing TSMC's expansion in the US is higher costs, including operating costs, labor, and depreciation per wafer. However, in the early phase, TSMC appears to be disregarding these capital expenditure realities. Industry sources say the plan to build 12 plants is the largest outward investment in TSMC's history. TSMC has shifted from an initial diversification strategy to an expanded base for advanced processes and chip packaging, becoming a key driver in reshaping the US semiconductor manufacturing sector. Support for the Arizona expansion has grown significantly thanks to a tariff agreement recently reached between the United States and Taiwan. The US government is also prepared to offer incentives in the form of an ecosystem of operations and labor, supporting the sustainability of activities in the United States. Experts say the US plan must be on a scale similar to Taiwan because around 70% of the company's customers are US-based fabless chip design firms, which require assurances about production security. These factors push TSMC to raise capital expenditures quarter by quarter. TSMC is now the main driver behind modern infrastructure development, responsible for orders from most AI computing suppliers. Managing such momentum is not easy for any company, which is why TSMC is regarded as a global asset in the tech industry.
