US detains Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman President Donald Trump on April 19 said the United States had detained an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman as the vessel attempted to breach U.S. sanctions. In a Truth Social post, Trump said the 275-meter-long vessel named TOUSKA was halted by the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Spruance after ignoring a stop warning. He said the ship had been disabled and placed under U.S. control, with U.S. Marines now in charge of the vessel. Iran has not publicly commented on the seizure. The notice came just hours after Trump said American negotiators would travel to Pakistan on April 20 to conduct peace talks with Iran. Two senior U.S. officials told NBC News on April 19 that Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and the president's son-in-law Jared Kushner were expected to travel to Islamabad to continue talks with Iran. Iranian officials pushed back on Trump’s statements about new talks. Iran's state news agency IRNA denied a second round of talks in Islamabad, saying there is currently no clear prospect for negotiations given the circumstances, citing what they described as excessive demands from the United States, a shifting stance, and a continuing naval blockade that Iran says violates the ceasefire. Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on April 18 that there had been progress toward a peace deal with certain issues having been resolved, but he warned Iran remains completely lacking trust in American negotiators. Iran's Revolutionary Guard Navy said it would close the southern Strait of Hormuz again and limit shipping until the United States lifts its blockade of Iranian ports. The force warned it would destroy ships attempting to pass through.
