Recently, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Procuracy announced that it has transferred the case files and the indictment charging Hoang Sỹ Thắng and 227 other defendants to the same-level People’s Court for trial on multiple drug-related offenses.
The defendants face multiple offenses, including illegal transporting of narcotics, illegal trading of narcotics, organizing others to use narcotics, illegal possession of narcotics, failure to report crimes, concealing crimes, and unlawful seizure or retention of assets. The prosecution described the case as a particularly serious crime.
The drug trafficking ring was identified through the investigation results of the VN10 case, involving four Vietnam Airlines flight attendants who carried drugs from France to Vietnam.
During the investigation, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Procuracy worked closely with the Ho Chi Minh City Police to clarify the acts and roles of the individuals involved and to strengthen the evidence. Investigators traced each key link in the chain.
Based on the findings, investigators reinstated the investigation into four defendants who had previously fled and were being sought, to indict and try them in absentia. One of those defendants is Ha Danh Nam (born 1974, from Nghe An province), who fled and lives abroad.
Investigators determined that Ha Danh Nam was the person who placed narcotics into toothpaste tubes and packed them with detergent sachets, coffee, cocoa powder, chocolate, toothbrushes, mouthwash, shampoo, and similar items to mask the drugs from detection.
Nam then recruited flight attendants and Vietnamese expatriates living in France to place the drugs into luggage or arrange express courier services to transport them to Vietnam. The drugs arrived in Vietnam after Nam hired Hoang Sỹ Thắng and Bui Van Anh to receive and deliver the drugs to buyers under Nam’s instructions.
In the VN10 case involving the Vietnam Airlines attendants, Nam allegedly placed 2,973.37 grams of narcotics (ketamine) and 8,311.2 grams of narcotics (synthetic drugs), totaling more than 11 kilograms of narcotics.
On March 16, 2023, when the Vietnam Airlines attendants landed at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, authorities detected them.
