Online fraud and asset theft conducted over the internet have continued to evolve in complexity, with schemes becoming more sophisticated and preying on public complacency and lack of vigilance. Among the reported tactics are impersonations of military officers to place large orders to steal funds, and “free gifts” schemes promoted through online shopping applications.
Perpetrators often use social networks and phone calls to contact business households and individual sellers, posing as logistics officers from a military unit and placing large orders. To build trust, they may use fake documents, contracts, and order forms featuring red seals.
They commonly request payment after delivery or ask sellers to frontload only a small portion. In some cases, they also require sellers to “hold” specific items from third parties, offering a high commission promise. Once victims transfer money, the perpetrators typically cut off contact immediately to prevent further follow-up.
The “free gifts” tactic has also increased. Suspects send links and messages advertising “free gifts” or “customer appreciation,” requesting personal information, OTP codes, or payment of shipping fees. In some cases, victims may initially receive a small amount to build trust, before being persuaded to transfer larger sums for various reasons and ultimately being defrauded.
