Authorities said a recent incident in Da Nang involved a sophisticated scam targeting a victim through TikTok. The victim, Ms. N.T.M.T, was contacted by an unknown account that claimed it could help install a “balance-change notification loudspeaker” for a MoMo-linked wallet.
After gaining the victim’s trust, the suspect guided her through a sequence of actions involving financial accounts. First, the victim was asked to install the digital banking app Cake Bank and verify her ZaloPay account.
Next, under the pretext of “completing the system process,” the suspect requested personal photos, including images of relatives, to support eKYC. Authorities said this step is used to collect biometric data that can help the offender take control of the account.
The suspect then asked the victim to provide the OTP code sent to her phone and to send a text to the 1322 number to activate a payment service. Authorities noted that these steps were disguised as technical support, making it difficult for the victim to recognize irregularities.
Shortly after the steps were completed, the victim checked her transaction history and discovered repeated debits through transfers. Authorities said the total amount withdrawn was about 27 million dong via the e-wallet linked to the bank account.
After gaining control, the offender quickly deleted the chat history to erase traces, complicating the investigation.
Following the incident, the Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention Department of the Da Nang Police issued an urgent warning. Citizens should never provide OTP codes to anyone under any circumstances, as OTPs are described as the final security layer for bank and e-wallet accounts.
Authorities also urged caution when sharing personal images, particularly ID cards or biometric data, because such information could be exploited to open accounts, borrow money, or carry out illegal transactions.
Users were advised not to install unfamiliar apps or perform money transfers or text-message actions based on instructions from strangers on social media. If support is needed, people should contact only the official channels of the bank or service provider.
In the event of suspicious signs, citizens should promptly contact the police or their bank to receive timely assistance and help limit potential losses.
eKYC (Electronic Know Your Customer) is an online identity verification process that does not require in-person meetings. It uses AI, facial recognition, and biometrics to analyze ID cards or passports, enabling quick, safe, and secure opening of bank accounts and e-wallets.
