Five European economies — Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands — have a combined GDP roughly comparable to the combined output of the five largest U.S. state economies: California, Texas, New York, Florida and Illinois. Euronews based its comparison on Eurostat data for the European Union and BEA data from the U.S. Commerce Department, focusing on both nominal GDP and purchasing power parity (PPP).
When the five largest European economies are grouped together with the five largest U.S. state economies, Germany leads with a GDP of €4.47 trillion in 2025. Germany is only slightly ahead of California, the largest U.S. state economy, at €3.76 trillion, reflecting California’s role as a global technology and entertainment hub.
France ranks third in the combined group with €2.98 trillion, followed by Texas at €2.57 trillion. Italy and New York come next, ranking fifth and sixth with €2.26 trillion and €2.18 trillion, respectively.
Spain ranks seventh with €1.69 trillion, and Florida is close behind at €1.62 trillion. The Netherlands, at €1.18 trillion, ranks ninth, while Illinois is tenth with €1.06 trillion.
In terms of nominal GDP per capita, U.S. states outperform the European economies. New York leads with €108,444 per person, while California and Illinois reach €96,887 and €83,490, respectively.
Texas and Florida also exceed the U.S. average, at €82,058 and €69,706, compared with a U.S. average of €89,599. Among the leading European economies, the Netherlands has the highest GDP per capita at €62,537, versus an EU average of €39,970.
PPP figures continue to show a clear advantage for U.S. states. New York remains the leader at 108,500 international PPS units, followed by California with 90,300 and Illinois with 89,300.
The Netherlands, at 84,035 international PPS units, is the only European economy close to the U.S. states in PPP terms.
The comparison also notes that poverty rates in the United States are higher than those in Europe’s leading economies. It further cites a study by Oxford University indicating that the time required to earn 1 international PPS in the United States is 63 minutes, about twice the pace in Germany, France and the United Kingdom.

Premium gym chains are entering a “golden era” that is ending or already in decline, as rising operating costs collide with shifting consumer preferences toward more flexible, community-based ways to exercise.
