On April 3, 2026, the Ho Chi Minh City Police Department for Criminal Investigation announced that it executed a temporary detention order against Nguyen Van Hieu (born 1994) for fraud and asset appropriation. Hieu previously worked as a bank employee.
According to the police announcement, Hieu exploited a customer, Dinh Thi L., who requested loan disbursement. After the bank transferred the loan funds into the customer’s account, Hieu used login credentials—specifically the customer’s password and OTP—that he obtained from the customer to transfer 2 billion VND to his personal account.
The police said Hieu then used the transferred funds to settle his own debts. The case is being investigated by the City Police’s Criminal Police Department to clarify the facts and determine charges under the law.
Financial experts and police authorities advised residents to remain vigilant when using banking services, particularly for online transactions. They emphasized that customers should not provide login passwords, OTPs, or device access rights to any individual, even if the person claims to be bank staff.
Authorities noted that financial institutions have clear internal policies: employees are not allowed to request customers to provide these security details under any circumstances.
During procedures such as loan disbursement or loan payoff, customers should complete steps directly on their own devices or at official counters with staff supervision. Limiting third-party assistance is intended to reduce the risk of information theft.
After completing transactions, users are advised to proactively change their bank app passwords to strengthen security and help protect accounts and assets against increasingly sophisticated fraud schemes.
