Metro Ben Thanh – Thu Thiem metro line to break ground on April 30, 2026: project scope and connectivity

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, on the occasion of the 30 April - 1 May holidays this year, the metro Line 2 project (Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem section) in Ho Chi Minh City will begin groundbreaking construction. The project is about 6.2 km long, entirely underground. The line starts at Ben Thanh station, runs along Ham Nghi Street, crosses the Saigon River into the Thu Thiem New Urban Area, and continues along Mai Chi Tho toward Thu Thiem station. Currently, the plan to connect Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City and Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai Province is expected to be implemented through Metro Line 2. Continuing to implement Metro Line 2's Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem section and moving toward forming the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh line will create a continuous connectivity axis, contributing to improved interconnectivity between the region's two largest airports by 2030. Earlier, in January 2026, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee approved assigning Truong Hai Group to conduct a feasibility study for the metro project, Line 2, Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem. In addition to the groundbreaking plan for Metro Line 2, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction says two important works are expected to be completed during the 30/4 - 1/5/2026 period. Specifically, in the road transport sector, the N3 bridge branch of the An Phu interchange construction project will be put into operation. In the technical infrastructure sector, the Tan Chanh Hiep Park project (in the Tan Chanh Hiep fish-pond area) will also be completed, adding green space to the area. In civil and industrial construction, waterways and urban rail sectors do not have works completed in this round. Additionally, the city plans to launch 10 new projects across various sectors, including some started and broken ground. In the started group, civil and industrial projects include upgrading Long Truong High School; constructing a new campus for Ho Chi Minh City College of Economics – Technical (Campus 2, Phase 2); and Hung Vuong High School. Meanwhile, seven groundbreaking projects span multiple sectors. In road infrastructure, the Ho Tram urban expressway – Long Thanh International Airport project is started to strengthen regional connectivity. In the technical infrastructure sector, projects in the Nha Rong – Khanh Hoi port area to expand the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum area will be implemented. In civil construction, a new administrative center and a scenic park at the Thu Thiem lake area. In the waterway sector, three major projects include Cai Me Gemadept Port – Terminal Link (Phase 2), Cai Meap Ha port and container terminal, and Can Gio International Transit Port (Phase 1) – projects expected to elevate logistics capacity and the port’s regional position in the southern region.
