Vietnam and China will accelerate three railway lines linking Lao Cai – Hanoi – Hai Phong, Dong Dang – Hanoi, and Mong Cai – Ha Long – Hai Phong. The three projects have a total investment of more than 21 billion USD, making rail cooperation a bright spot in the bilateral strategic partnership and strengthening connectivity between the two countries with Central Asia and Europe. During the state visit to China by General Secretary and President To Lâm, from April 14–17, Vietnam and China issued a joint statement on continuing to deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for cooperation and promoting the building of a Community with a Shared Future for Vietnam and China with strategic significance at a higher level in the new era. In the joint statement, both sides stressed the objective of making rail cooperation a bright spot in the bilateral strategic relationship. They agreed to link the framework 'Two corridors, One belt' with 'Belt and Road', accelerate border infrastructure connectivity and expand interconnected rail routes to Central Asia and Europe to boost trade and logistics. The two countries welcomed the early completion of the feasibility study for the standard-gauge Lao Cai – Hanoi – Hai Phong railway, and signed the planning agreement for the Dong Dang – Hanoi and Mong Cai – Ha Long – Hai Phong lines. China pledged to support Vietnam with loans, technology, training and guidance for capable enterprises to participate in construction.
