SeoulCeuticals has published what it calls the first official layering protocol for its Ultra Snail + Volufiline Serum, citing incorrect retinol sequencing as the main reason some users do not see results and experience irritation.
The company says up to 52% of first-time retinol users experience skin irritation. It also references a separate clinical analysis indicating that up to 90% of people apply retinol using incorrect product sequencing.
SeoulCeuticals points to clinical discussion data presented at the 2022 American Academy of Dermatology meeting, stating that buffering retinol with a hydrating layer can reduce irritation scores by up to 35%. The published protocol specifies that snail mucin should be placed before retinol, not after it.
According to the protocol, applying snail mucin after retinol can create a film-forming barrier from glycoprotein and allantoin content that traps retinoic acid compounds near the skin surface, increasing irritation risk. The company says correcting this single step can reduce a cause of irritation affecting a significant portion of retinol users.
SeoulCeuticals says the Ultra Snail + Volufiline Serum combines two actives with different solubility profiles in one formula. It describes Volufiline as an oil-soluble sarsasapogenin compound developed by Sederma, supplied at a clinical concentration of 5%, and said to penetrate through lipid channels to the hypodermis to stimulate adipocyte differentiation and lipid storage.
The company describes its snail secretion filtrate as water-based (97.5%) and operating in upper dermal layers to provide hydration, collagen support, and barrier repair.
Because the formula carries both solubility profiles, SeoulCeuticals says standard layering guidance may not apply. It states that users of isolated Volufiline concentrates are often instructed to apply that ingredient last, after moisturiser, due to oil solubility. For this specific product, SeoulCeuticals says Volufiline is carried in a water-compatible emulsion base using Jojoba Seed Oil as the penetration vehicle, placing the serum at the serum step: after toner and before moisturiser. It adds that applying it last is the wrong stage for this formulation.
SeoulCeuticals cites in vivo clinical trials conducted by SPINCONTROL for Sederma using a gel cream containing 5% Volufiline applied twice daily for 56 days. The company reports a mean volume increase of 2.2% at day 56, with participants in the top quartile reaching 8.4%. At 28 days, it reports a mean increase of 1.4%, with top-quartile participants at 6.6%.
The published protocol outlines a six-step morning routine: gentle cleanser; hydrating toner or essence; Vitamin C serum if using a separate L-Ascorbic Acid formula; the Ultra Snail + Volufiline Serum applied to targeted zones first; moisturiser; and SPF 30 or higher.
For the evening, the protocol runs: oil cleanser; water-based cleanser; hydrating toner or essence; the Ultra Snail + Volufiline Serum; retinol on two to three nights per week for beginners; and moisturiser. SeoulCeuticals says this sequence positions the serum as a pre-retinol hydration buffer to support retinol’s cell-turnover mechanism with reduced surface irritation.
SeoulCeuticals says the protocol includes targeted application areas where Volufiline’s adipocyte-stimulating mechanism may be most relevant: under-eyes, cheeks, temples, nasolabial folds, jawline, and perioral area.
The company also states that niacinamide is fully compatible, citing snail mucin’s pH of approximately 5.5 as not conflicting with niacinamide’s working range of 5 to 7. It says peptide serums complement a Centella Asiatica component, which it describes as supporting collagen synthesis through the TGF-B/Smad signalling pathway.
SeoulCeuticals says PDRN products should be applied before the serum in the layering order, with Volufiline addressing the hypodermal level while PDRN targets dermal tissue regeneration.
For chemical exfoliants, the protocol recommends keeping them to dedicated evenings rather than combining them with retinol in the same session. On exfoliant nights, it says the serum can be applied after the exfoliant has absorbed, with snail mucin’s allantoin content providing barrier-calming support following acid use.
SeoulCeuticals states that hydration and texture improvements are typically visible within one to two weeks. It says volume changes at targeted zones appear for consistent twice-daily users at four to eight weeks, with the Sederma clinical protocol measuring peak effect at 56 days.
“Users who have given up on retinol because of irritation are often one sequencing change away from tolerating it,” said Yu-Jun Park, Head of Product Education at SeoulCeuticals. “Placing the snail mucin serum before retinol, not after, is the single most impactful adjustment most users can make.”
