Beef prices in the United States are near record levels, but relief appears elusive due to constraints on both domestic and imported supply. Americans are paying more for steaks and burgers as beef prices remain close to their highest levels.
Federal data show that the average price of unprocessed ground beef in March was $6.86 per pound, equivalent to $15.12 per kilogram. The figure was down 3 cents from the February peak, but it is up about 48% compared with March 2021.
Officials and experts say prices are unlikely to fall in the near term. Derrell Peel, an agricultural economist at Oklahoma State University, said: “There are no signs that beef prices will fall.”
In its latest forecast, the USDA projects beef prices to rise by more than 10% in 2026 and could reach as high as 18%.
