At the first-quarter 2026 press briefing on the afternoon of April 9, 2026, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said the United States has opened trade investigations affecting 60 economies. The ministry also reported that the U.S. has initiated two Section 301 investigations under the 1974 Trade Act.

The deputy minister said negotiations on countervailing duties with the United States are ongoing and have completed six rounds of talks. In principle, he noted that the two sides have reached a relatively high level of consensus and their positions are close, but there remain issues to discuss and resolve in the near future.
The ministry also referenced a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling related to tariff policy, which rejected certain aspects of previous tariff measures. Based on that ruling, the United States promptly applied Section 122 to impose a general tariff of 10% on all countries.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan said the 10% tariff is a temporary rule, applying for 150 days.
Vietnamese authorities, the ministry said, are continuing to engage with the United States and closely monitor policy developments. Under Section 301, the United States will implement a separate legal process, with a deadline for countries including Vietnam to submit responses to the concerns raised by the U.S. of April 15.
