During the official visit to Vietnam by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico from April 12 to 14, 2026, the two countries agreed to adopt a joint statement establishing a strategic partnership between the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Slovak Republic, formally upgrading Vietnam–Slovakia relations to a strategic partnership based on 75 years of traditional friendship.
Building on diplomatic ties established since 1950, Vietnam and Slovakia said that creating the framework for a strategic partnership would raise the level of bilateral relations, strengthen existing cooperation mechanisms, and deepen cooperation at both bilateral and multilateral levels in line with the long-term interests of the two peoples.
In the areas of economy, trade, and investment, the two sides identified these as a cornerstone of the strategic partnership. They agreed to deepen economic, trade, and investment cooperation, drawing on existing bilateral and multilateral agreements and the complementary nature of their economies. The parties also committed to ensuring an open, fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory business environment.
The two sides agreed to strengthen the role of the Intergovernmental Committee on Economic Cooperation between Vietnam and Slovakia and encouraged the establishment of sectoral subcommittees. These subcommittees are intended to review and assess the implementation of agreements and to propose measures to promote trade and investment in a balanced and sustainable manner.
Vietnam and Slovakia also agreed to facilitate private investment and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including automotive manufacturing, electronics, transportation, energy (including nuclear), green technology, pharmaceuticals, mechanical engineering, specialized machinery, science and technology, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence.
The two countries reaffirmed their support for the full and effective implementation of the Vietnam–EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and agreed to promote the ratification of the Vietnam–EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA).
