On the morning of April 13, Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng presided over the official welcome ceremony for Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi. Fico is on an official visit to Vietnam from April 12 to 14, 2026.
At the welcome ceremony, the two prime ministers saluted the flag, reviewed the guard of honor of the Vietnam People’s Army, and witnessed a march past.
After the welcome, the two leaders moved to the Government Office to hold talks and witness a signing ceremony and the exchange of cooperation documents between Vietnam and Slovakia. Before the talks, they also visited a photo exhibition on the country, people, and the good relationship between Vietnam and Slovakia, organized by the Government Office in cooperation with Vietnam News Agency.
After 76 years of bilateral relations, Vietnam and Slovakia have developed well, with both sides attaching importance to the traditional friendship built long ago. The two countries regularly conduct visits, meetings, exchanges, and high-level contacts.
Economic and trade cooperation remains on a steady growth track. Bilateral trade reached 1.73 billion USD in 2024 and 1.78 billion USD in 2025.
Slovakia approved the Vietnam–EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) in February 2023.
As of December 2025, Slovakia had 16 active foreign direct investment projects in Vietnam with total registered capital of 140.87 million USD. Vietnam currently has one investment project in Slovakia with total capital of 447,000 USD.
Cooperation in areas including security and defense, science and technology, culture and tourism, and labor cooperation is maintained steadily and expanded gradually.
Slovak citizens are exempt from visa requirements when entering Vietnam during the period from August 15, 2025 to August 14, 2028. The Vietnamese community in Slovakia, numbering about 10,000 people, is recognized as Slovakia’s 14th ethnic minority and is described as an important bridge in bilateral ties.
Based on the long-standing friendship, the official visit of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to Vietnam is expected to provide an opportunity for both sides to further strengthen political trust, promote substantive cooperation, and chart new directions for the bilateral relationship in the period ahead.
